 AWB wins reform vote

AWB wins reform vote

03 Sep, 2008 06:27 PM
AWB Ltd has finally succeeded in shedding its dual class shareholding structure with a 77pc vote in favour of the move at an extraordinary general meeting in Melbourne yesterday – the third such meeting held to try to decide the issue.

A previous EGM on August 21 was controversially adjourned when the vote to end A-class shares appeared likely to fall just short of the required 75pc majority of A-class shareholders.

Both AWB and opponents of the move campaigned furiously in the interim to persuade growers who hadn’t already voted.

This time 44pc of eligible A-class (grower) shareholders voted, up from 27pc at the previous meeting.

AWB has been lobbying extensively through key areas of the West Australian grain belt including an appearance at Dowerin Field Days by managing director, Gordon Davis.

It says the constitutional changes are critical if it is to be a competitive wheat marketer.

The reform plan split the board with four grower directors coming out publicly against the changes on the grounds they could erode grower loyalty.

Well done - you have now given a company with NO or very few morals and ethics the power to trade themselves into the ground. Maybe this is a good thing as they might finally shrivel up and fade away!

Amazing - it shows that if you keep voting on something long enough you can get the result you want. is this ethical or constitutional ??? How can they keep adjourning a meeting just because something is not going the way they wanted ?? Now the path is open for AWB to be offloaded and sold and there is no grower share blocking it. Well done to those that voted for it you have just allowed another grower owned organisation to slip from our grasp. let's wait & see how long before they offload this part of the business that is not making money !

Will the directors of this new entity receive large parcels of shares in addition to an obscene salary?

Bredan Stewart's attack on the so-called 4 dissenting directors calling them unethical is the pot calling the Kettle Black. Who was at the wheel when all this company destruction started with the oil-for-food scam Mr Stewart? There was evidence blocked that may have proven the knowledge and involvement of himself and a lot of politicians if it had been released. Re-open Cole and demand the truth of what took away Australian wheat growers' only collective bargaining tool and company that ran it. Why else would Bredan refuse to resign? Who is more unethical? Who stood up for growers and who stripped away millions of shareholders dollars and ruined the good name of AWB? It was not the four A class Directors. Bredan honour your promise to leave and do it now.

Will the directors of this new entity receive large parcels of shares in addition to an obscene salary? Steffi why do you think they are trying to push the grower directors out early?
