 'Mad Monk' meets Lord Monckton

'Mad Monk' meets Lord Monckton

04 Feb, 2010 06:30 AM
A DAY after releasing his climate change policy, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has met the world's most famous climate change sceptic, Christopher Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley.

While a spokesman for Mr Abbott earlier this month said the Coalition leader would not meet Lord Monckton, Mr Abbott changed his mind and accepted a short visit from the British climate sceptic yesterday.

Mr Abbott said yesterday it was the job of the Opposition Leader to meet people with a significant argument to make and that he was not an ''intellectual snob''.

''I think that you actually come up with better policy if you're prepared to have a discussion not just with people who say yes sir, yes sir, three bags full, sir.''

Lord Monckton has been a globally divisive figure. He has previously stated that after the fall of the Berlin Wall communists adopted ''climate change'' as a new flag to rally around on the way to one world government.

Mr Abbott added the he had also approached the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists - campaigners for stronger climate policies and other environmental issues - for a meeting.

Peter Cosier, a member of the Wentworth Group, yesterday confirmed that Mr Abbott's office had approached him for a meeting and he would be happy to talk to anyone.

Speaking to The Age before his speech to the National Press Club in Canberra yesterday, Lord Monckton said he had noted that Mr Abbott was very engaged by climate issues.

Lord Monckton said he told Mr Abbott his $3.2 billion policy to reduce carbon emissions by 5 per cent was unnecessary because carbon affected the atmosphere only one-seventh of what the United Nations said it did.

But Lord Monckton added that Mr Abbott's policies to encourage tree planting and to help industry save energy would help address ''genuine'' environmental problems.

''It is indeed better to have a policy which nods to the issue of climate change for those who still believe, and there are some diehards who still believe, that fixes some of the genuine environment issues that are a lot cheaper than the enormous amounts diverted to this ridiculous climate thing,'' Lord Monckton said.

Later Monckton told the National Press Club that human-emitted carbon emissions were not warming the planet, that increased sun activity accounted for recent higher temperatures, and that the draft negotiating text at December UN climate talks had proposed setting up a world government.

Lord Monckton continues his speaking tour in Adelaide later this week and finishes his tour in Perth next Monday.

How has this guy avoided the asylum? Science is very useful to some people except if it may harm their own self interests. Mr Abbott what are you thinking? Maintain your credability and steer away from aristocratic lunatics.

It is refreshing, at least, to hear an alternative point of view to that of Gore, Flannery et al. BTW, you could have chosen a kinder photo. Why focus on a symptom of Graves Disease from which Lord Monckton suffers?

The vast majority of comments from people who agree with this bloke are never printed, while plenty who hate him are shown.

Loc Hey, if you have legitimate evidence to substantiate your claim that a "vast majority of comments from people who agree with this bloke are never printed", please forward it to editor.farmonline@ruralpress.com

Hey if his so called lunatic ravings stack up, the bloke needs to be heard.

Isn't it funny how in this whole climet change debate we have seem to lost sight of the fact that the planet and its relationship with the solar system has been changing ever since it was all created. The moment a person comes along and highlights that to us they are lunatics. I read in a 2008 copy of Australian Geographic yesterday that the Australian continent has moved north in its lifetime the length of this country and while it was doing so volcanic activity which started at Cape York and finished with Mt Macedon is now located out in the Tasman Sea. How will an ETS prevent Australia from continuing to drift north as the article tells us we are? Ensure that you read and listed to all of what Monckton has to say, not just the bits that pro-climate change reporters report. His credentials are somewhat substantial. It is a pity there does not appear to be anyone in the media prepared to impartially report on what he has to say.

Mick, your personal attack against Monkton is typical - when you have no convincing rational argument to counter his claims you resort to personal abuse. I attended a Monkton presentation at which he came over as very intelligent, well researched, factual, witty and polite - all the things his detractors appear not to be. As for the photo accompanying this article, shame on The Land. Monkton has Graves disease which causes his eyes to protrude and yet you deliberately focus only on the physical evidence of this illness. What next - if you interview someone who's had a stroke will your photograph show only that part of their face which is paralysed? Since when did physical appearance determine a person's worth? Would the newspapers be so keen to print unflattering photos of Monkton if he were black or a woman? I think not, but because he is a white, middle aged male, and by accident of birth also an aristocrat he is open slather for the purile, childish drivel which passes for journalism these days.

FarmOnline chose to use this photo because it has not been widely circulated and was taken at a clever angle that encapsulates many of the differing opinions on the man.

Well said Arden, this debate in the media is so one sided. I also find it distasteful that Tom Arup (and also his editor) can lead with this headline and refer to Tony Abbott as "Mad Monk". This is disrespectful. I never see Rudd referred to as "Milky Bar Kid" or "fish lips". There are many slur terms for him out there. Why is this so?

As a nation we have rejected the truth. With the absence of truth honour and integrity also disapear and are being replaced with opinion. When you get rid of absolutes you only have opinion to stand on and that is not stable ground. Differences of opinion brings out the worst in people in the absence of truth. Bullying and lack of self control is one of the results. Mick you need to have a good look at your self in the mirrow and see if your responce is respectful. regards Richie 10

Again, Loc Hey makes a very definitive unambiguous wild accusation, I suspect without a shred of evidential support. You have been challenged by the moderator to put up or shut up. I would go further: put up or apologise. I now look forward with interest to seeing your response. Ignoring the challenge should not be the option of a responsible poster to this forum. Unless you justify your accusation or apologise, you damage your cause.
