Tesco dumps 'green' label

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
UK SUPERMARKET giant Tesco will no longer feature a carbon reduction label, which the chain launched to great fanfare four years ago.

Tesco was featuring the Carbon Trust’s carbon reduction label on its products, but has decided to drop it, saying it was too time-consuming and expensive to justify.

When it launched four years ago, in conjunction with the Carbon Trust, Tesco’s Carbon Reduction Labelling plan was hailed by then Tesco chief executive officer Sir Terry Leahy as the start of a “revolution in green consumption”.

Is this a sign that common sense can prevail??

Let's hope so.

Tesco is regarded as being socially responsible as an organisation. This move demonstrates the market does not value green. In the UK too many initiatives have lacked integrity and been shown to be no more than opportunities to gain windfall profits. Tescos would not have been flippant in its decision making to take this action.

I'm surprised it took so long. Four years to recognise the unmistaken stench of a skunk investment looks like a slow management response to me.

So lets just repeat the verdict again for the eco-plodders. "it was too time-consuming and expensive to justify".

To put that another way, the tossers make a big noise about this stuff but when it comes down to the purchase decision it won't deliver a single extra penny to the revenue, let alone the bottom line.
