2009 was hot - but not hottest

05 Jan, 2010 12:27 PM
ACCORDING to Bureau of Meteorology statistics released today, 2009 was Australia's second hottest year on record.

However, the nation as a whole experienced its warmest second half of the year (from July to December) and the decade from 2000 to 2009 has been recorded as our hottest yet.

Individual states of NSW, Victoria and South Australia all also recorded their warmest second half, particularly in Victoria where a new record maximum of 48.8 degrees Celsius was achieved at Hopetoun.

Melbourne also recorded a new maximum of 46.4 degrees Celsius, as did Scamander in Tasmania at 42.4 degrees Celsius.

But it wasn't just hot - it was also a drier-than-average year with a 453-milimetre average recorded, slightly below the long-term average of 464mm.

It was particularly dry across parts of Queensland and NSW, coinciding with developing El Nino patterns.

And it was a year of flooding rains - particularly in May in parts of Queensland and NSW where monthly rainfall figures were the highest on record, and at year's end.

The weather bureau should put it all into proper context, not say 'on record', implying very long term, but 'since 1900'.

bom keep pushing out the same old propaganda even though the world is cooling

Unsurprisingly Peter Garrett was on the 6 am news haranguing us about this less than 1° change on 100 years (during which time our recording technology and temperature scale has changed) and taking the political opportunity to berate Tony Abbott who does believe the climate is changing, he just doesn't agree its man-made change. It's an interesting statistical exercise - zoom in on the graphs for yourself. Forgive me, but doesnt the Australian BoM belong to Mr Garrett.

Oh - and the graphs shows national average rainfall went UP about 10% over that time too (seems they left that out of the press release).

If you look where it was the warmest over the last 10 years you will see that it was where the worst areas of drought have been for the last 10 years. No Cloud, No Rain, Warmer days. What planet are the BOM on? Or are they just porns in the Rudd the Dudd propaganda machine to create a massive new tax? No Rocket scientist at the BOM. Like Abare they produce what is required. And of course it is only the 2nd warmest decade the other was during the federation drought. The last few weeks here have been the coolest I have ever experianced this time of year. Look out the Ice age is coming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excuse me, but isn't an average derived from the sum of the total number of recordings divided by the number of recordings? Why choose 1960 -1990, did it just happen to be the coolest 30 year period on record? Has any one seen a copy of the original? Does it use actual data or the WMO data which had certainly been adjusted to show a warming trend for Darwin at least.

And all the motor vehicles, engines, air conditioners, roads, buildings etc created during this period have nothing to do with this "increase". And we should ignore the way measurements were taken pre 1970's i.e. the local copper takes a measurement in the backyard stations next to "hot" patrol car he has just parked there. THE ONLY RELIABLE DATA IS THE SATELLITE DATA AND IT TELLS A SIMPLE STORY: IT GOT COLDER IN THE 70's AND THEN IT WARMED UNTIL THE 1990'S AND NOW ITS COOLING AGAIN. And of course we will just forget the fact that the rest of the world did not follow suit and that currently the rest of the world is literally freezing its nuts off! Record freezing cold, ice and snow all across the Northern Hemisphere from the UK across Europe, Russia and Asia, China, Japan, Canada and the US!

alph - the world meterological organisation has come out and said that 2000 -2010 was the hottest on record for the globe, the BOM said the same about Australia but they are all part of the conspiracy arent they! AJ have a look at the long term graphs under the climate seciton of the BOM webpage and you can pick any time scale you like. National increases in rainfall do not tell the whole story look to where it has increased and how the defeciencies are in the most valuable agricultural areas. The BOM serves the government of the day, just as it did under howard.

Before sounding off, please check the science, especially recent papers such as *An observationally based energy balance for the Earth since 1950* Murphy et al, Journal of Geophysical Research, 2009, also *Earth's Global Energy Budget*, Trenberth et al, American Meteorological Society, 2009. Note that these are published papers, in peer-reviewed journals, inviting comment and further analysis. Try the library. The earth is not cooling, despite the best efforts of mining geologists and fossil-fuel publicists.

Coldest winter for 100 years in UK. BoM is now under the control of the Bimbo for Climate Change and there is no system of check and balances in place. This past decade is only warmer than the previous one because the Mt Pinatubo eruption (1992) cooled the previous decade by up to 0.6C. Adjust the records for this proven cooling anomaly and we have an unambiguous 18 year temperature plateau that is totally at variance with alarmist theory. Atmospheric CO2 has increased by 10% since 1992 and there is not a jot of warming to show for it. The climate muddles are cactus.
