The government has spent more than $97 million eradicating equine influenza, according to the Federal Budget papers released this week.k.
The papers revealed the agreed limit for the response was capped at $108 million, and under Commonwealth, State and industry cost-sharing agreements the Government agreed to underwrite the horse industry's proportion.
The $97.2m provided in the 2007-2008 year was for a national response to the disease, which enabled Australia to declare itself provisionally free of equine influenza by March this year.
Close to $260m was spent by the government on assistance to the industry to cope with and recover from expenses from the outbreak.
There was no commitment forecast for any compensation to the industry as a result of any adverse findings from the Callinan inquiry (which are yet to be releases) into the disease's outbreak.
