Cleaned up: Kiernan ute theft is 'unaustralian'

29 Jan, 2010 07:43 AM
FORMER Australian of the Year Ian Kiernan, better known as the face of Clean Up Australia, was shocked to hear his beloved Ford Falcon ute had been stolen and burnt out on Australia Day.

Thieves stole the vehicle from outside Kiernan's Kirribilli home. It was later found dumped and burnt out in Hornsby.

"It's just the most unaustralian thing to do," Kiernan says. "While the rest of the country is celebrating what a great country we live in, these people are out doing things like this. It's disgraceful."

The car contained, among other things, Kiernan's iconic Akubra hat, his tools and Clean Up Australia Day materials.

Kiernan is passionate about cars and is restoring a 1927 T-Model Ford and has been buying up 1970s Bedford trucks.
