Give Rudd a chop: Mid-air meal snap linked to diet

05 Apr, 2009 12:10 PM
Could the Prime Ministerial tantrum that reduced a flight stewardess to tears indicate an iron deficiency?

The PM has apologised for blowing up at the woman after he did not receive the non-red-meat meal he had requested on a VIP flight from the Pacific Islands Forum in Port Moresby in January.

Yesterday, Karen Inge, head of nutrition at the Victorian Institute of Sport, said: "If you cut down on red meat it can reduce your iron levels.

"The major role of iron is to carry oxygen in the blood.

"If you have low oxygen it makes you tired.

"It's not rocket science. You only have to look at a child who is tired to see how cranky they are.

"When you are tired you don't often react in the best way possible."

Opposition agriculture spokesman John Cobb said a lack of red meat explained the Prime Minister's "toddler tantrum" and why he was "as weak as a limp lettuce".

"Without iron in their diet a person will become pale, insipid, wishy-washy, anaemic and prone to outrageous outbursts," Mr Cobb said.

"A lamb chop or steak would put colour in his cheeks and iron in his soul.

"If you denied me a chop, I'd have serious anger management issues."

Mr Rudd took time out from the G20 summit in London to apologise for the outburst.

"All of us are human, I'm human, I'm not perfect," he said.

But yesterday - as he met with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, during a brief stopover on his way home - he found support from one of his inner circle.

The Housing Minister and member for Sydney, Tanya Plibersek, said Mr Rudd was "absolutely not" bad-tempered.

"He's a great person. He is very hard-working, he's very dedicated to his job," Ms Plibersek said.

"It's never appropriate for any of us to lose our temper but unfortunately many of us do on a regular basis - me included."

The controversy has boiled to the surface as the Meat and Livestock Association begins an advertising push - including a supplement in The Sun-Herald today.

In the past Mr Rudd has denied he is anti-lamb.

Late last week his office said he was not on a meat-free diet, but "follows a healthy, balanced diet including red meat, other meats and of course plenty of fruit and vegetables".

The Australian PM refusing red meat? It's un-Australian! Where's Sam Kekovich?

MY DAD HAD A SAYING; "....IF YOU CAN'T CONTROL YOURSELF, YOU CAN'T CONTROL OTHERS.." MR RUDD SHOULD TAKE NOTICE! ALL THAT HAPPENS IS ONE WHO LOSES THEIR TEMPER TEND TO SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH "YES" MEN----TOO SCARED TO ROCK THE BOAT. SO HE WORKS LONG HOURS; HAS HE NEVER HEARED ABOUT DELEGATION. NO ONE PRODUCES AT THIER BEST WORKING EXTRA LONG HOURS. MR. HOWARD WAS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A RETENTIVE MIND WHEN HE COULD GIVE A SPEECH WITHOUT RELYING ON NOTES.

A word of advice Kevi, always be nice to the chef and their staff. Having a relo who is a cook I can promise you they always get the last laugh.

Don't just give him a chop, give him the CHOP. Any good leader must be above childish temper tantrums.

Kevin Rudd should be given the chop, not a chop. Nobody in their job should have to put up with abuse of any kind, especially when it is such a trivial thing. Couldn't he leave the meat on the plate?

Kevin Rudd’s true colours are showing. Why try to make excuses for his appalling behaviour? We all get tired, if that is indeed the reason for his outburst and not just sheer nastiness. However, we don’t all start treating people like dirt just because we feel a bit run-down. Kevin Rudd is two-faced - nice in public but nasty when he thinks no-one is looking. Simple as that. I can’t believe someone who pretends to think so much of 'the workers' thinks it's ok to treat one of the RAAF cabin crew in such a shabby manner. Shame on you, Mr Rudd.

How many Australians know that lamb is off the menus at Parliment House dining rooms. How un Australian is that?

Rudd reputedly loses 1 member of his staff a month - the tantrum with the hostess is but an example of his private ill temper becoming known. Those who rule by fear and react with temper are not suited to making significant decisions in the long term. By allegory, the first and most significant rule of training sheep dogs is self discipline; Rudd needs to understand why this is so.

Appears the hostess has excluded red meat from her diet also. Tears might work at home, but surely not in the military. It is a demanding job. Toughen up.

I think John Cobb should get the Order of Australia medal for this.
