Good falls recorded in Vic and Tas overnight

1/07/2008 11:07:00 AM
Some solid rain falls have been recorded overnight in Victoria and Tasmania, and more is on the way next week.

According to The Weather Company, which provides weather forecasting on FarmOnline, cloud is crossing the southeast of Australia with a cold front, bringing showers and Alpine snow to Tasmania, Victoria and southern NSW.

It reports that patchier cloud elsewhere along the southern coastline is causing brief showers, but skies are mostly clear elsewhere under a high.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the best falls in the last 24 hours were on the Victoria coast, but inland Ben Nevis received 15mm, Edenhope 10mm, Mt William 31mm, Horsham 6mm, Stawell 5mm, Ballarat 7mm, Casterton 8mm, Warrnambool 18mm, Kyabram 5mm, Shepparton 5mm, Falls Creek 26mm, Mt Buller 27mm, Omeo 10mm, Wangaratta 6mm, and Eildon 9mm.

In Tasmania Smithton received 17mm since 9am yesterday, Cressy 19mm, Launceston 16mm, Scottsdale 26mm, St Helens 12mm, Scotts Peak 22mm, Warra 23mm, and Liawenee 23mm.

There were also some good falls in South Australia, particularly in and around Adelaide, while in the South East Mt Gambier recorded 19mm and Coonawarra 12mm, but the rain did not penetrate to inland agricultural regions.

The Bureau still has in place warnings for some wild and windy weather for Tasmania and Victoria for the day ahead, but has lifted the warnings for SA.

However, there are forecasts of more good rain to come, with the Centre for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies in the United States forecasting more rain for southern Australia next week (see maps).

For the week ahead it is predicting light to moderate falls for much of the eastern grains belt, with the heaviest falls over the Snowy Mountains.

A similar forecast is in place for the week of July 8-16, with Victoria and Tasmania to again receive the best of the wet.
