JBS Swift to front Senate for alleged market power abuses

19 Mar, 2009 05:32 PM
The globe's largest meat processing company, JBS Swift, is expected to front an Australian Senate hearing to answers questions about alleged abuse of market power.

It follows a complaint made to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in February about the Brazilian-owned company.

A spokesman from Tasmanian hide and skin processor Cuthbertson Brothers, Doug Dickinson, alleged yesterday that production had been halved because the business could no longer tender for skins from Longford abattoir, which Swift bought last year.

At a hearing into meat marketing Tuesday night, NSW Senator Bill Heffernan said inquiries would be made by Senators, possibly by either the agricultural committee or the meat marketing inquiry.

"We want to hear both sides of the story," Mr Heffernan told Rural Press last night.

We are fast becoming a country owned by other countries - we didn't need a war, just let them buy us. Abbatoirs are just another monopoly trying to dictate to every one.

I wouldn't worry too much about who owns what with all those digital dollars floating around. When push comes to shove, the western society will become the third class countries and the third class countries will be the boss.

Bill Heffernan thinks any business that employs more than 20 people is abusing its market power and that generating a profit from agribusiness (except as a farmer) is immoral and should be banned.

Any inquiry in which he's involved won't be worth the cost of running the air-conditioning in the committee room.

Bill Heffernan should be congratulated for his determination in bringing issues to the public arena. Certainly there is little concern for the wellbeing of farmers from the other side of politics. I am concerned over the behaviour of JBS in the treatment of producers with the LPA contract. Trying to force them to sign the LPA NVD by with-holding payment.
