Polluters push for lower emission cut target

04 Jan, 2010 09:19 AM
HEAVY industry has seized on the weak outcome from the Copenhagen climate change summit to put pressure on the Rudd government to scale back its unconditional pledge to cut emissions by 5 per cent by 2020.

The Australian Financial Review reports the government has until the end of this month to complete negotiations with other nations on Australia's greenhouse target.

The chief executive of the Australian Industry Greenhouse Network, Michael Hitchens (whose organisation represents large polluters like Rio Tinto, Xstrata Coal and BlueScope Steel) said analyses by Treasury and consultancy Access Economics had concluded that Australia would incur much greater per capita economic costs under a 5 per cent cut than the United States and the European Union would under their greenhouse pledges.

Two points should be repeated. The first is that the highly regarded former Prime Minister, John Howard averred that there should be a ETS and that Australia should lead the way. Secondly, per head of population Australia pollutes up to 20 times more than people in third world countries and twice as much as the EU, (the figures depend on what one is quoting). Former prime minister of Malaysia Mr. Mahateir made it clear that developing countries resented this greed, especially since Australia's skills and wealth could redirect its abilities to successfully reduce its pollution to its own advantage.

It depends on how the statistics are compiled. There are more millionaires in India than people in Australia. Those people pulling rickshaws are used to water down the numbers.
