Trent Loos' US Update: Chicago abuzz with bees at work

22 Dec, 2009 07:04 AM
HIGH atop the roof of the Marriott Hotel on the Miracle Mile in downtown Chicago agriculture is at work.

Three bee hives are thriving in their untraditional home and the honey produced is being used in the hotel's bakery goods and signature beer.

Feedstuffs FoodLink and farmer/rancher Trent Loos recently visited with the hotel's executive chef about the bees and other things he and his staff is doing to provide more local flavor for hotel guests.

All reads like a nice story....however, I wonder whether anyone has considered the potential impurities in honey made in the environment of Chicago? Could have some interesting levels of lead and other heavy metals and chemicals; if not great.

Whenever I've been in Chicago I have found it to to have fairly clean air - it is the "windy city" - it gets a bit of fog, but it's heaps cleaner than that awful "LA" place. And the Chicago people are nice too!
