Trisolfen tipped for registration

15 Dec, 2011 11:25 AM
IN A world first, pain relief treatment Trisolfen – an Australian innovation – is tipped to be registered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) this week.

Australian Wool Growers Association director Chick Olsson said the move put Australian growers at the forefront of animal welfare.

“The federal government has recognised that farm animals feel pain and have registered a farmer-applied product that allows more humane treatment of sheep undergoing necessary welfare procedures,” Mr Olsson said.

“Painfree surgical mulesing is still the most successful once-off lifetime procedure of protecting Merino sheep from breech flystrike.

“It has proven difficult for opponents of mulesing to argue against surgery and strong pain relief, something that happens on a daily basis with humans for many life-saving operations.”

Mr Olsson is saying this is equivalent to life saving operations on humans. So we can expect sterile conditions and general anaesthic, with an extended period of bed rest and physiotherapy afterwards?

Or is this just another cynical attempt to hide a barbaric and gruesome practice behind a screen of "science"?

colours – why don’t you find out for yourself before banging on about that which you know absolutely nothing about.

Is it understood that the operation takes place without pain relief and that this product is applied afterwards

I doubt that Chick would have an operation with a promise of a disprin afterwards

The AWI designed clips are working well and are still available

Colours doesnt know that 80 percent of the worlds humans have little access to any decent medical care, and end up in gruesome backroom huts to have surgery conducted with no pain relief, no hygiene, no care and a high chance of infective complications after such surgery. Compare this to our woolgrowers, who protect the long life of their sheep with quality feed, vaccinations, parasite care, feral animal control, and now, accredited mulesing contractors and strong pain relief for these operations....Colours, our Aussie farmers care more for their sheep than do the majority of Governments.

colours wouldn't even know what a sheep looked like, let alone seen a fly blown one.

Plastic mulesing clips working well? You cant be serious Bruce. Bruce you obviously dont have any sheep. I tried them , as did many people I know, and all were appalled by hoy clumsy and hopeless they were. My contractors refused to continue to put them on. Not only dont they work at all, but the pain they cause is similar to castration rings...sorry Bruce, a huge embarrasment for our industry and a complete waste of AWI r and d money...
