US ethanol plants continue to shut down

10 Dec, 2008 07:02 AM
Pine Lake Corn Processors in Iowa, is the latest US ethanol manufacturing operation to shut down its plant due to decreasing ethanol prices and increasing input prices.

The board of directors of PLCP LLC indicated that the measure was necessary to avoid continuing losses.

"Increased corn prices on forwarding contracts obtained during the summer and recent decreasing prices for ethanol have negatively impacted the company's net worth," a Pine Lake statement said.

"The company remains optimistic about restructuring its obligations and renewing manufacturing activity in the future."

In addition, investor-owned AltraBiofuels Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary Altra Indiana LLC will indefinitely lay off employees and close the doors to the $170 million, 92 million-gallon-per-year Cloverdale, Indiana, fuel ethanol plant, construction of which was completed in May.

This is proof that this form of ethanol production is a joke. The amount of raw material needed to produce one litre of ethanol is ridiculous and once government support through subsidies goes you are on your own as these companies have found. World food costs are climbing on the back of demand for this failed industry. Maybe we all need a reality check.
