Murray-Darling may cost up to $6bn

Murray-Darling may cost up to $6bn

13 Aug, 2010 09:28 AM
A FUTURE federal government may have to spend an extra $2 billion to $3 billion purchasing water in addition to $3 billion of existing water buybacks to fulfil promises made by the two parties to buy all the water needed for the Murray-Darling river system.

Both Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott this week promised farmers would not be left out of pocket because the federal government would foot the bill for any water needed for the environment.

The value of the promises is difficult to quantify, but economists and water experts say they could double the cost of the existing buybacks, The Australian Financial Review reports.

Neither side has earmarked new funds for the commitment, saying it would occur when the current budgeted buybacks and spending on upgrades to irrigation infrastructure were winding up, and beyond the four years covered by the projections of the federal budget.

The eventual cost will be determined by what limits on water use are adopted after the Murray-Darling Basin Authority releases a plan to put water use in the river system on a sustainable footing.

Huge 12m tidal erosion can revive old dry paleo dormant once mighty rivers, creeks and lakes. Desalinate the country and change desert to rain forest. Prevailing winds from northwest Australia are to east and south. = More clouds and rain across Australian continent. Erosion trigger channel + huge tides = huge erosion of land tidal channels and existing dry rivers and lakes = low cost excavation with erosion = land desalination = more clouds = more rain = huge carbon sink = cooler climate across Australia. 1. Evaporation from: tidal rivers, canals, lakes, marshes. 2. Transpiration by mangroves and other seawater tolerating plants. (tidal evaporation 1 and 2 = more rain = rain forest 3) 3. Transpiration from rain forest. Greener deserts, more clouds, more water in the rivers, lakes and soil Cooler and more moderate Australian climate for more see: http://www.climatechange.gov.au/en/submissions/cprs-green-paper/~/media/submissions/greenpaper/0929-mitic.ashx
