Nats call for mass cull of dirty camels

29 Dec, 2009 12:07 PM
THE federal opposition is considering declaring a war on camels as part of its climate change policy, arguing that the desert pest is responsible for more emissions than the exhaust of 300,000 cars.

When the government earmarked $19 million for a camel cull in July, it sparked international outrage, but the coalition wants to take it up a notch and decimate the million-strong camel population in the name of the environment, the Australian Financial Review reports.

The Nationals are pushing for the mass cull, arguing that it would not only reduce emissions but also prevent millions of dollars of damage to the environment and farm infrastructure, such as fences and water troughs.

Coalition agriculture spokesman John Cobb, a Nationals MP, said it was high time the government got serious about eradicating the camel scourge, just as feral buffaloes were wiped out in the early 1980s.

"If you were to get rid of all the feral camels, it would be equivalent to taking away 2.5 per cent of emissions from all the cars on Australia's roads," he said.

So the Nat's are now saying climate change is real? Apart from ridding us of feral camels (which I don't disagree with) what else is in the Nat's climate change policy? Or is that it?

I do agree on a cull of camels, but can we please start with Rudd and Wong?

Thats the problem of playing both sides against the middle! When it comes to the crunch you come across as being very hipocrytical. At least the Libs have made a stand.

Whats next? Cull all our sheep and cattle as well? The Nats are really running on a collective single brain cell here.

Whilst I fully support the cull of feral camels, I would point out that the camels run in a freerange environment eating naturally sequestered grass, so their net contribution to ghg is precisely bugger all. The biggest boost to ghg will be in aviation kero to fuel the chopper that goes hunting them.

Another kill campaign against largely harmless animals whilst ignoring the enormous damage done to the environment by us humans, in particular cattle farmers?! Bring it on, Nats because right now you are in the International spotlight and I can tell you others are not as naive as your peers! You act as though it's OK to destroy 40,000ha of living, native bushland every year but camels (quite suitably adapted to the desert) need to be wiped out! Unlike cattle, camels are soft-hooved (ie less damage to the soil structure) and they need far less water than cattle. Shouldn't we be looking at reducing the impact of damage where it's done most? 90% of all clearing in Queensland is executed in the name of the cattle industry and ever since Sir Joh this hideous practice has continued unabated. Broad-scale clearing has already killed millions of native animals and plants (including thousands of koalas) and it is one of the largest contributors to global warming. If you must cull something for the sake of the environment, start looking amongst your peers, John Cobb.

Why cull them, sell them back to the Arabs!

Whats next? Cull all our sheep and cattle as well? The Nats are really running on a collective single brain cell here. Yes that's the ultimate plan Jim Hawkins.

Now it is camels who are being blamed for emissions. Why not put the blame where it truly belongs on animal agriculture that contributes significantly to many environmental threats to humanity? Animal based agriculture contributes to emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gasses, and much more. Further shooting camels in some areas from helicopters will result in high wounding rates, and there will be panic and stress for the animals. The Government must take responsibility to find more humane solutions than always killing wild animals.
