German court upholds biotech corn ban

02 Jun, 2009 10:26 AM
A German court has denied Monsanto's request to suspend a government ban on the sale and cultivation of its biotech corn MON810.

German Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner issued the ban in April based on studies showing that the crop could have an adverse effect on the environment.

A court rejected Monsanto's petition for a suspension on May 4 and that decision was upheld Thursday, May 28, finding no evidence German authorities had overstepped their powers.

The European Union has authorised the trait, but Austria, Hungary, France, Greece, Luxembourg and now Germany have banned it.

It is becoming increasingly obvious to many governments, medical organisations, farmers and the wider public that GM crops are full of careless assumptions and dodgy science that is not looking at the whole picture. When will our governments listen to the people and take a stand against corporate bullying (lobbying) and protect us, our animals, our farms, the wider environment. The ground swell is rising and the tide seems to be turning on this hugely controversial issue- more information is making it to the wider public, more farmers are realising that complete control of their production systems is not going to happen - as much as Monsanto would like otherwise, more top notch chefs, processors and foodies are speaking out against the corporate gm propaganda. Just need to get it through to governments that majority of australians would choose not to buy the crap, so why keep approving it!!??
