GrainCorp to close eight merchandising outlets

GrainCorp to close eight merchandising outlets

16 Dec, 2009 02:30 PM
GRAINCORP’S patience with its merchandising arm appears to be running out, with the company announcing it will close eight of its GrainCorp Merchandise outlets.

The eight stores to close are Goondiwindi in Queensland, Trangie, Narromine, Coonamble, Junee and Hillston in NSW, and Warracknabeal and Charlton in Victoria.

The merchandising division of GrainCorp announced losses of $23 million for the full year to September last month, primarily on the back of write-downs in chemical and fertiliser inventory.

There will be ten redundancies in all as a result of the closures, nine of them in the field, and one corporate position.

The closures are consistent with GrainCorp chief executive officer Mark Irwin’s tough talking stance at the annual results announcement – and there could be more in store.

The store closures do not mean the end of possible changes within the merchandising division.

A strategic review into the income stream is currently being conducted, with further announcements into the ongoing operation likely either tomorrow or Monday.

There is strong speculation there will be further changes at a number of GrainCorp’s stores, although not necessarily closures. A GrainCorp spokesman said the company was unable to comment until the announcement was made.

Graincorp is paying for its involvement in getting rid of the Single Desk. Rural Retail outlets like Graincorp and Landmark have seen a drop off in support from the over 80% of Wheat growers who supported the Single Desk National Pool. If you treat your customers with contempt in favour of the Shareholder you will be burnt at the stake. Growers are not stupid. I for one will never support Graincorp or AWBs Landmark stores again. Incompetant Board members who strived above and beyond the call of duty to destroy growers collective marketing system are to blame, one in particular who prides himself as being a young dynamic new leader of farmers was in it up to his neck. Growers no longer have any say in this company built by farmers seeking a fair go which was like AWB taken over by Corperate thugs seeking to maximise their own shareholder return.

Good for you Fred. You choose for yourself who to buy merchandise from and how to sell your grain. That'll teach the incompetent free marketers.

Have you seen the latest share price of AWB & Graincorp? So much for all the promises made by Gordon Davis - I hope he enjoyed his bonus. Shortly we will be able to buy them both back for a song. We need to keep the current directors on these boards as their incompetance is doing the job for us dickytiger. Grower owned and controlled once more & the chairman of Graincorp Don Taylor claimed farmers made poor directors. Keep up the great work Don.
