Iraqi Govt sues AWB for Oil for Food rorts

1/07/2008 4:48:00 PM
The Iraqi Government has filed a civil lawsuit in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York against 94 companies, including AWB, for their role in the corruption of the United Nations Oil-for-Food program.

The Iraqi Government's civil lawsuit alleges violations of the US Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act.

AWB is remaining tightlipped on the matter, issuing only a short statement to the media.

"These matters are already the subject of litigation in other US civil actions before the US District Court for the Southern District of New York and AWB will vigorously defend its position if the case proceeds," the AWB release states.

It is believed the Iraqi Government seeking more than $10 billion in compensation from the companies in question, which it alleges was cheated from the Iraqi people.

Meanwhile, AWB has held its 2008/09 estimated pool returns at unchanged levels in its latest market update.

The EPR range for APW wheat is $370-$390 (free on board, GST exclusive) and the Western Australian noodle grade wheat is now at $375-$395 (FOB, GST exclusive).

Well well, what do you know! Seems there were 92 others besides AWB. Wonder how many were US companies? Don't tell me Saddam collected $10bn. Why did he bother to stick around and how come they are just finding this now. That's an average of $107m per company. That would have stuck out like the proverbials. Seems to me it was the accepted way of doing business at the time after all the money was Iraq's. And don't forget this happened in the '90s after the Gulf War. Who knows we may find out later that this is the US trying to recover some of its war expenses and finish up smelling like roses.

it would seem that the US has got more than it seeked in getting rid of the single desk. not only has it done this under the noses of the wheat growers but the government too. the silly Australians were the only ones to put their hands up in this. all the others are laughing and will be for a while. When in the states they were telling me how we were the joke over there. who wins the companies, they will run the grain industary from now on. where will they come from? while we have this policy of being scared every time someone looks sideways at us. they will shaft us as they have. Lamb, grain, beef, and on goes the list. I'm not ante US but I'm ante copping it from them!!!!!!!!!!!!! they play rough and we play like babies.
