Libs backdown on wheat amendment

20/06/2008 9:23:00 AM
The Liberals have backed down on its threat to impose an amendment to the Federal Government's wheat deregulation bill, which would have eased regulations over port terminals operated by bulk grain companies.

The Australian Financial Review is today reporting that the Liberal Party has ditched its amendment, after lobbying by The Nationals and by AWB, which argued that the move would harm grain growers.

They say the regulations are necessary to ensure fair access to ports by all players.

Labor's legislation, which effectively deregulates the marketing of bulk wheat exports, was debated in the Senate last night and is expected to pass parliament in time for the planned July 1 start date for the new system.

The Liberal Party has left the decision on the legislation to 7 members to decide. 7 people have used their influence to overrule over 80% of Australian Wheat growers.

There is no Industry Restructure fund or compensation and growers have been refused the right to a vote on their future. The liberal party went to the last election with a policy of allowing growers to put plans forward for a grower owned and controlled marketing system.

Unlike labor they broke this Policy and jumped into bed with Labor to avoid the Cole inquiry from being reopened as Rudd threatened.

The Liberal Party admitted to growers that this support for the legislation had nothing to do with growers ability to choose more buyers, but it was to punish AWB for embarrising senior Liberal identities.

The fall out will be a massive move away from the Coalition at the next election towards Independants. Just as Labor has planned. Well done Dr Nelson you have fallen into the trap.

The US Ambassidor is over the moon with the Australian Government's decision to destroy Australian Wheat Growers 'Collective Bargaining system'. 'Democracy is dead.'

The Labor & Liberal parties have once again shown that they have no concerns for the rural sector and and hell-bent on destroying our agricultural industries.

If this is about corruption then they should make sure their house is in order first, but it is not about that and they know why they are doing it but they will not tell us.
