Nats to vote against wheat marketing legislation

01 Jun, 2008 03:40 PM
Federal Nationals Leader Warren Truss has exposed the split in the Coalition over the future of wheat marketing, indicating his party will vote against Labor's changes, which the Liberals are likely to support.

Labor Agriculture Minister Tony Burke this week introduced legislation that would dismantle the single desk and open the way for multiple companies to be licenced to export week.

The Liberals have indicated they will support the legislation, after several amendments it proposed were adopted.

However, Mr Truss said The Nationals would oppose the Bill.

"The National Party's views on organised marketing in the wheat industry are well known and they've been a fundamental tenet of the party for many years," Mr Truss said this morning.

"We believe the single desk has served the industry well, it delivers the best returns to the growers and also the best results in maximising the returns to our country from our wheat sales.

"We've been a supporter of that concept in the past, we believe it serves the industry well and that continues to be our position."

"Oboviously the Liberal Party has been bought out by the big end of town and others with vested interests."

They certainly are not listening to the vast majority of wheat growers (80+% windsor poll April 2008).

What hope would rural Australia have of being heard if it were not for the National Party.

The National Party is a disgrace.

It is not hard to see why they hardly hold any seats in Federal Parliament these days.

They do not support business, innovation, competition, or indivivdual rights - rather, most of their policies are developed around some sort of "chip on their shouder" socialist mentality.

The Single Desk is all but dead.

Long live competition!

This Labor Legislation is the most immoral, undemocratic Government sellout I have ever seen.

Just when farmers cannot afford any further loss this Government is about to take all the risk that was shared through the National Pool and drop it on the individual farmer.

Evidence of last year's disaster with growers trying to hedge their own crop should have been a clear warning of pending disarster with removing our orderly marketing system.

Australian farmers have been sold out by Rudd and Burke, neither listening to all the submissions by growers.

This arrogant bunch who are advised by big business and unknown public servants have to be held to account for thie hatred of the Australian farmer.

It is time for the industry with its allies to unite and take the message to Canberra and do what ever it takes to stop this anti-Australian legislation.

If Rudd tried to take away unions collective bargaining they would kick him where it hurts.

The Nationals decision not to support wheat reform is no surprise.

Their record of supporting failed grain marketing monoplies in Australia to the end is now complete.

The Nationals now are the only party that believes the single desk isn't dead.

Deregulation is what has kept Australian agriculture alive.

Over the years it has made our supply chains internationally competitive, just look at the dairy supply chain.

Deregulation works especially in the long term.

Warren Truss should change the National Party name to the Retreat Party because they definitely do not stand for progress.

I thought the national party when in government stripped AWB of its veto powers and deregulated the bag and container trade.

Stopping labor's legislation leaves us with a status quo which is no single desk.

Editor's note: On its own The Nationals vote will not be enough to block Labor's legislation. Labor has a majority of seats in the House of Representatives, and with the Liberals support the legislation is assured passage through the Senate.

The majority of growers voted for a "Single Desk".

In the old days politicians acted for, and on behalf of, their constituents.

The Liberal country members must join their National Party members in blocking this Labor disaster, brought on by a complete lack of understanding by "city-centric politicians".

The deregulators might view the Minister's second reading of the Bill and consider how there could possibly be any thing in this legislation for growers.

The legislation encourages a system where the bulk handlers will accumulate for the multi nationals and then the wheat will pass into the traders' hands as it leaves the port thus absolving them of any transparency requirements.

This is a disaster in the making.

We in NSW recently returned a figure of 87% support for a single desk in the Windsor Poll because we understand the workings of a market through the domestic scenario plus we have witnessed the antics of Graincorp for almost two decades.

One thing the Nationals have done is maintain their position on the Single Desk marketing system for wheat.

The same cannot be said for the Liberal Party who in government could not make a decision (purely for political purposes - for fear of going into an election with a divided coalition).

Now in opposition they are rushing to support Labor's reforms.

John Howard stands condemned for his inaction on this issue and wheatgrowers have, for the last two years in particular, been the sacrificial lambs for his failed policies.

We congratulate the Labor Government for its decision and support Tony Burke for having the fortitude to at last give farmers choice of to whom they sell their export wheat and at what price.

It is time the Nationals take a good look at themselves.

There is no such thing as going back to a fully regulated system.

Some of the previous comments highlight the fact that the wheat marketing issue has divided the country.

A few dinosaur parochial people [70% of around 10% of wheat growers] have had their say without offering a way forward.

They have no argument to convice the other 93% of wheat growers.

I want to see a regulated marketing system.

If the proposed legislation is not passed now, there will be every chance the marketing arrangements will be deregulated further which will then impact on growers significantly.

It is time for the minority to accept that change is inevitable and move on.
