The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) grains group will not pursue plans for a co-operative marketing agency.
It will instead focus its attention on providing information and brokerage services to growers.
VFF grains group president Geoff Nalder said a combination of the short timeframe to get a co-op up and running and the wishes of members meant the group would pursue a different model.
“We’ll be looking to ensure growers can accurately compare prices, in a manner that matches apples with apples," he said.
"That will occur in an expansion of our grain marketing guide.
"We’ll also be looking to educate growers on the best way to market their grain through a series of seminars and meetings."
The proposed brokerage service will primarily attempt to match up growers with grain with particular specifications to domestic end-users seeking the same thing.
Mr Nalder said it would assist growers in breaking in to the domestic market, where those without contacts can often miss out on sales.
But the domestic focus could only be the beginning.
“With the opening up of grain exporting, and the full deregulation of the bagged and containerised markets, there is no reason that in the future we couldn’t consider linking up with international customers.”
