New super broccoli a major boost to health

17 Aug, 2009 02:57 PM
A new range of super vegetables has been launched today, which are the promoters say are scientifically proven to contain more than 40 percent more antioxidants than regular varieties.

Vital Vegetables was developed by Australian scientists at the Department of Primary Industries (Victoria), Vilmorin Cie and Plant & Food Research.

Booster Broccoli is the first in the new range of super vegetables and contains significantly more active antioxidants than regular varieties, including high levels of sulforaphane (SF), a naturally occurring, long-lasting antioxidant.

Antioxidants have been proven to reduce the risk of a range of diseases such as heart disease, certain cancer and obesity.

Dr Rod Jones, leading scientist at the DPI, led a large team of researchers behind the initiative and believes this is one of the most important developments in the fight against serious illnesses.

"We know that 1 in 3 people could greatly reduce their risk of cancer through simple changes to their lifestyle, like eating a greater variety of healthy foods rich in anti-oxidants, not smoking and maintaining a healthy weight," Dr Jones said.

"Our research suggests the higher level of antioxidants found in Booster Broccoli may increase health and well-being and reduce the incidences of serious illnesses," he said.

Dr Rod Jones, to introduce this increase in antioxidants do we know what we lost in the process? This must be difficult to know because we haven't yet mapped all nutrients and their interaction in vegetables. By what process have you developed this increase in antioxidants? If they have been genetically modified then there hasn't been any independent, short or long term study of human consumption of genetically modified foods. Crucial answers if we are wanting to achieve increased health and well-being and reduce the incidences of serious illnesses.

Why not just eat foods that are naturally very high in antioxidants? There is no reason to muck with nature like this other than financial gain... Thanks, but no thanks Rod...

If farmers focused on soil health through eliminating toxic chemicals from production systems, re-mineralisation of deficient soils, sequestering of carbon into soils, and cycling those nutrients and carbon through active soil biology, we wouldn't need these blinkered approaches to our 'food'. Seems the scientists pulling out these rabbits from the hat (such as GM food) are so piecemeal, shallow and short-sighted in their approaches to nutrition and soil/ plant/ animal and human health.

I think the whole story hasn't been told here, I believe. The new super broccoli isn't a product of GM foods, it's a line of broccoli that has been around, and has been found by testing the many different types of broccoli that are out there, so it's completly natural, also resistant to a lot of diseases itself - there for no need for chemicals.
