Demand for live cattle continues to grow

11 Dec, 2008 03:33 PM
Australian live cattle shipments in October were 12pc higher than the same month last year, according to Meat and Livestock Australia, as robust demand from Indonesia continues to attract record volumes of Australian cattle.

MLA reports that according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, exports for the month totalled 74,451 head, taking shipments to all destinations for the first 10 months of 2008 to 699,000 head – up 12pc year-on-year.

During October, just over 71pc of Australian live cattle exports were destined for Indonesia with 53,297 head shipped, up 23pc year-on-year.

Exports to Indonesia for the first 10 months of 2008 (534,409 head) surpassed the calendar year volume for 2007 (516,992 head) and were valued at just below $333 million.

In October Israel received its first shipment of Australian cattle since May, with 9608 head for the month, seeing it surpass Libya as Australia's second largest market so far in 2008 at 35,122 head.

MLA reports that Libya received no cattle for the second consecutive month, leaving Australian shipments so far in 2008 at 28,385 head.

The only other regular markets to record substantial shipments during October were Russia (3469 head), Japan (1500 head) and China (1988 head), while Pakistan received its second shipment of Australian cattle for 2008, with 2499 head.

Smaller shipments for the month were sent to Kuwait (800 head), Malaysia (780 head), Bahrain (400 head) and Qatar (200 head).

All farmers have to make a living. Going back to my farming days, humane slaughter was of paramount importance, but these animals are being shipped to Muslim states who have different ways of slaughter. With this in mind, would it not be better to slaughter in Australia? I live in England.

Live exports are wrong on two grounds. We cannot and should not be strongly supporting a trade in livestock while we are discussing greenhouse gas emisssions.

On a global scale, they produce 18pc of our greenhouse gases, and methane is 21 times more potent than CO2. We need to dismantle our livestock industries on such a global level.

Also, allowing animals to endure long sea voyages, to end up having their throats slit while still conscious is not humane and clearly Australia is endorsing animal abuse. We can't maintain "animal welfare" in foreign countries no matter what the industry says.

Turn your lights off Viv and your fridge. What's your computer doing on? Jets flying holiday makers all over the world, gomers cruise the carriibean. Motor sport & lots of over things you can rant at.

The Farmer, are you really a farmer or just a person who ridicules anyone interested in animal welfare? You certainly are not gaining points for the farm sector.

There can be no possible justification for shipping animals half way across the world just to have them brutalised and cruelly slaughtered when they get there. As for the farmer - people on jets, on ships and using computers have an element of choice about what they do. Animals have none. If you want to present a positive picture of farming, this is not the way to do it. You appear both arrogant and ignorant.

Nicky, I just think it's more important to feed and clothe the poor and needy of world, than for the fab and rich to jet all over the planet looking fab.

Olivia, 14000 sheep does make me a farmer. And every farmer I know cares about animal health and welfare.

But I do enjoy repartee with you animal lib types who don't have to make any thing happen in the real world. Most of you spend time chasing a cause-celebre, to give some sort of meaning to otherwise empty lives.
