Mad cow march on parliament

03 Apr, 2010 04:00 AM
ANOTHER farmer rally is being planned to march on Parliament, this time to oppose the Government's decision to allow beef imports to Australia from countries which have had bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

This is despite a Government decision earlier this month to introduce tough new quarantine guidelines which would delay any imports by at least two years, and could prevent some beef imports altogether.

The rally is being planned for May 11, however will be competing with the delivery of the Federal Budget for crucial media and political attention.

The Australian Beef Association is helping convene the rally, and alerts will be sent to more than 20,000 supporters of the cause who have pledged their opposition to the import decision on media networking site, Facebook.

To date the OIE/WAHO assumes that the human and animal health standards set out in the BSE chapter for classical BSE (C-Type) applies to all forms of BSE which include the H-type and L-type atypical forms. This assumption is scientifically not completely justified and accumulating evidence suggests that this may in fact not be the case. When L-type BSE was inoculated into ovine transgenic mice and Syrian hamster the resulting molecular fingerprint had changed, either in the first or a subsequent passage, from L-type into C-type BSE. In addition, non-human primates are specifically susceptible for atypical BSE as demonstrated by an approximately 50% shortened incubation time for L-type BSE as compared to C-type. Considering the current scientific information available, it cannot be assumed that these different BSE types pose the same human health risks as C-type BSE or that these risks are mitigated by the same protective measures. http://www.prionetcanada.ca/detail.aspx?menu=5&dt=293380&app=93&cat1=387&tp=20&lk=no&cat2 please see full text ; Wednesday, March 31, 2010 Atypical BSE in Cattle http://bse-atypical.blogspot.com/

Every "mad cow" marcher should have a serious think about why he/she is marching: is it because the thinking is that there is a real chance of BSE entering the country (a remote chance is not good enough-we have long moved past using quarantine to protect our markets) or is it because of fear of competition (whilst having no qualms of exporting to the same countries from which they are trying to prevent imports). Hypocrisy, fear and ignorance are poor substitutes for honesty, fairness and principle.

Agree Bushie. This is fear of foreign competition, plain and simple. If those marching spent the time improving their efficiency, they'd be a lot better off. . We'll end up with export markets blocked at this rate.

My name is Christine Lord journalist and mum of Andrew 'andy' Black who died aged 24 e of vcjd, on 16th dec 2007 . check out the website www.justiceforandy.com click on the documentaries page to watch the bbc 1 programme i filmed about his last days and my fight for justice here in the UK. Young people continue to die of vcjd regularly in the uk, just weeks ago a lad of 21 died in london. BSE is still in UK herds. I am a freelancer who is not funded has no political or corporate alliance, I just want to prevent other mums and parents feeling the heartbreak I do every day. The Uk government lied and said beef was safe, bovine material is used in medicines including vaccines, baby food, school meals all sorts of food and medicines. Dont listen to political or corporate rhetoric protect your families and children..,make an informed choice,...we are still not being told the truth about vcjd how many have and will die of the disease ( check out my list of victims on the site ) ...protect yourself in australia....govenrment care more about cash than public health...my son paid the ultimate price 60years of life....dont expose your families to vcjd. christine x
