The long-awaited kick in prime market rates over the past fortnight encouraged a solid to stronger demand for store cattle at Warrnambool, Vic, on Friday where a larger than expected yarding of 2800 was penned.
Local buyers from the Warrnambool region and Mt Gambier in southeast South Australia were the main supporters of the sale, paying to $845/head for Angus steers, aged 20- 22 months, while weaner steer sales topped at $687 for a yard of 19 Charolais weighing 380kg.
With the steer portion yarding sold by liveweight bidding, the grown steer portion was mainly conducted within a 160-183c/kg range, while weaner steers fetched bids of 170-201c/kg (live).
A highlight of the market was a bid of $1280 made for a pen of third-calf Angus cows, with 100pc of March-drop Angus calves at foot, while the tops from this re-depastured draft made $1210.
