Goats ride sheeps back

27 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
EASTERN States over-the-hooks goat prices have followed the rapid increase in mutton prices over the past year.

Goat prices reached a low point in mid-April last year, however, since then a price recovery has resulted in a 31-45 per cent year-one-year price rise. The heavier the weight, the larger the percentage price increase on last year.

Since the low point in mid-April 2009, over-the-hooks goat prices moved from an average of 144c for 12-16kg cwt goats, to 245c/kg cwt when prices peaked in late January 2010.

Prices have since subsided and are currently averaging 236c/kg cwt for 12-16kg cwt goats, due to higher available supply and a major processor leaving the market – both impacting competition.

Most over-the-hooks categories currently average between 236c and 240c/kg cwt.

The rise in goat prices over the past 10 months has coincided with the steady increase in sheep prices.

The rise in over-the-hooks goat prices has mirrored national over-the-hooks mutton prices since the beginning of Autumn last year.

The rise in mutton prices has also made goats more favourable and competitive at wholesale and retail and subsequently assisted overall demand.

Improved seasonal conditions and better market conditions have allowed most goats sold to be in good condition and carry more weight than last year. Year to date eastern states goat slaughter numbers are around 6pc higher so far this year. Increased numbers in SA and Victoria have contributed to this trend.
