Merino hoggets soar to $112.50 at Jerilderie, NSW

Prices for Merino ewe hoggets soared to $112.50 a head during an enthusiastic demand for quality breeders lines for store sheep at Jerilderie, NSW, on Friday.

Buyers from three states attended and competed for the 18,000-head yarding, which found many lines being forced onto the market due to the exceptionally dry conditions being experienced across a wide area of southern NSW.

If there are still hoggets sold in the sale yard, why don't we see it in the butchers? Do butchers have another name for hogget or is it passed off as lamb? Years ago I always bought hogget as I happened to like it better.
