Farmscan reaps Brazil boost

22 Jun, 2008 02:47 PM
Farmscan is continuing its rapid recovery and new growth in the agricultural market, with parent company, Computronics, recently announcing a $5 million manufacturing licensing agreement with South America's largest machinery manufacturer, Stara.

The agreement provides for Stara, which is based in Brazil, to manufacture and instal Farmscan Canlink 4500 variable rate control and spray control systems into Stara's existing machinery lines.

Farmscan and Stara will also work together to develop more advanced products and new products for the global market.

Stara sells more than 12,000 machines per annum and exports to 28 countries.

Farmscan general manager, Ian Giles, says the Canlink systems will initially be installed into Stara's spreading and seeding equipment products.

Farmscan supplies a major portion of the controllers required for airseeders sold in Australia as well, which total about 350 units.

Mr Giles says Stara sells about 600 in a season – and this figure could grow to 2000 per year with more growth through South America.

He said while the agreement related to the Canlink 4500 systems, Stara had also indicated its interest in other Farmscan spray control and monitor products.

"They turn-out 20 self-propelled sprayers a week, and their exports will also help to open new doors for Farmscan product," he said.

Mr Giles said while Brazil was several years behind Australia's farming industry, it was developing quickly.

He said more advanced products and new products developed with Stara would, of course, also be available to the Australian market.

"At this stage, like Australian farmers, they want all of the features of control and monitoring built into one system."

Computronics managing director, Freeman Wyllie, said the agreement was another step towards growing export markets for the company's products, which were world leaders in their class.

"We see this focus on product development and global partnership arrangements as an important element of Computronics' future," Mr Wyllie said.

"The prospects for growth with Stara are enormous.

"They provide a comprehensive range of quality and affordable farm equipment, and they are expanding their sales into Europe, as well as the US and Canada."

Stara director president, Gilson Trennepohl, said he considered Farmscan variable rate and spray control systems to be the best on the market for functionality and simplicity of use.
