Clyde Ag to auction signature pastoral holdings

28/07/2008 2:52:00 PM
Two of Queensland's signature grazing properties, Thylungra and Clover Downs, as well as two blocks in NSW, will be offered at auction by the Swire Group's Clyde Agriculture in September.

Clyde Agriculture managing director, John McKillop, says both Thylungra and Clover Downs - to be auctioned in Brisbane on September 9 - have impressive production potential, demonstrated by large-scale sheep meat production and improved wool quality over the past decade.

"Clyde Agriculture is offering four properties for sale in order to rebalance its property portfolio which is currently disproportionately weighted to livestock production," Mr McKillop said.

NSW properties Toorale Station, Bourke, and Brewon, Walgett, will also be auctioned in Sydney on September 11.

Mr McKillop said Clyde Agriculture plans to reinvest in agriculture by purchasing more dryland and irrigated farming holdings.

"The holdings have been operated under the company's hardline commitment to environmental responsibility and the two Queensland stations have untapped potential to turn off certified organic sheep meat or goat meat in large volumes," he said.

Renowned 282,000-hectare channel country station, Thylungra, 126km north-west of Quilpie on the sealed Diamantina Developmental Road, was established by pastoral pioneer Patrick Durack in 1868.

It was the starting point for Durack's historic drive of 7250 head of breeding cattle and 200 horses on a 4828km trek, the longest undertaken by Australian drovers up to that time.

Thylungra boasts 44 bores and numerous dams, tanks and piping to troughs.

Rainfall for the last decade is about 310 millimetres.

It has a carrying capacity of about 18,000 breeding ewes, 16,000 merino wethers, 4000 replacement ewes and 1800 breeding cows.

"Patsy Durack selected his country well as Thylungra is effectively a valley, with a watershed from the northern top of the property and along the western and eastern sides," Mr McKillop said.

Clover Downs, south-east of Cunnamulla features an estimated carrying capacity of 64,000 DSE and the 125,300ha aggregation makes up 50pc Queensland premier pastoral region.

"The property benefits from the size and scale of the aggregation, which has a wonderful mix and balance of strong soils and a good body of clean, natural pasture," Mr McKillop said.

He said Clover Downs offers three substantial homesteads, excellent stock handling facilities and working improvements, eight artesian bores, 162km of poly pipeline, 85 poly storage tanks, 100 stock water troughs and 18 ground tanks, recently desilted.

"This is very clean wool-growing country and buyers inspecting Clover Downs will see heavily grassed breeding and fattening country with high lambing and calving percentages," he said.
