It was a mixed result for the wine industry during June, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which show a jump in domestic sales but a slump in exports.

The ABS reports that the trend estimate for domestic sales of Australian produced wine was 36 million litres in June, an increase of 1pc from May 2008 figures.

Seasonally adjusted, the estimate for domestic sales of Australian produced wine was 39.2 million litres in June, an increase of 12.8pc on that of May and 12.2pc on June's last year.

Domestic sales of Australian produced white wine rose modestly, up by 0.5pc to 17.2 million litres this month but 1.3pc lower than production figures at the same time last year.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for domestic sales of Australian produced white wine was 18.7 million litres in June, an increase of 13.8pc on May 2008 production and 11.5pc higher than that of June 2007.

For red and rosé table wine, the ABS trend estimate for domestic sales rose by 1.6pc to 13.4 million litres for June and was 1.9pc higher than sales figures of June 2007.

Again, the seasonally adjusted estimate, much higher for domestic sales of Australian produced red and rosé wine was 14.6 million litres in June, an increase of 11.9pc on that of May 2008 and 11.8pc higher than June 2007's figures.

Exports of Australian produced wine however, decreased by 14pc in June to 53.5 million litres.

The ABS says the value of the exported wine in June 2008 was $185.5 million.

Australia exported 717.2 million litres of wine, in the 12 months ending June 2008, with a total value of $2.7 billion.

This was a fall of 8.9pc in volume and a decrease of 6.8pc in value over the corresponding period to June 2007.
