Stephen Pannell must be having a really good chuckle at the moment after his 2007 SC Pannell Adelaide Hills sauvignon blanc nabbed the trophy for best savvy at the Tri Nations Wine Challenge recently.
We hope the Kiwis don't take the loss too badly.
However, Australia also won Country of Show at the event that, like the rugby, pits us against New Zealand and South Africa.
The competition, which began in 2003, is chaired by British wine critic Robert Joseph, with a judge from each country choosing the wines for the 15 categories.
Australia is represented by wine authority James Halliday.
While Australia can now gloat about its sauvignon blanc, there are more celebrations as the McWilliams Mount Pleasant Lovedale semillion 2003 won white wine of show and wine of the show.
Tasmania's Stoney Rise 06 pinot noir was awarded red wine of show.
However, the Kiwis did win the trophy for best shiraz - that went to Villa Maria's reserve Gimblett Gravels syrah 2006.
Meanwhile, it's three times lucky for Peter Lehmann Wines.
It has again been named Australian Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Fair in London.
The company won the title in 2003 and 2006 and is pleased to have won the producer of the year trophy again.
Chief wine maker Andrew Wigan says, "This award reinforces the Barossa, our growers and Peter Lehmann Wines as a force to be reckoned with on the world wine stage."
The company also won the best riesling trophy for its stunning 2002 riesling.
