THE Yarra Valley has fought its way back from a virtual tourism standstill - the direct result of February's Black Saturday bushfires.
A combination of recent long weekends, the Easter break and the popular Yarra Valley Grape Grazing Festival was just what Victoria's oldest wine region needed to put it back in the minds of tourists.
Well-known De Bortoli Wines, which attracts 120,000 people annually, was forced to close its doors for about three weeks following the fires, but the third-generation family company is now back on track.
In the May issue of G rapeGrowers & Vignerons, Shay Bayly looks at the Yarra's road to recovery and speaks to 2007 Gourmet Traveller Wine magazine's Winemaker of the Year, Steve Webber, about De Bortoli's fightback and his thoughts on the wine industry's challenging times.
The magazine also reports on an unlikely emerging market where Australian exports are growing at four times the rate of all Aussie wine exports, tax uncertainty continuing to cloud the Australian wine industry and the recent re-branding of an iconic South Australian wine business.
And GG&V's June issue will feature its new format, which gives the publication a sharper look, with more concise news stories, greater expert commentary and a stronger industry voice.
