Heads roll as AWI cuts costs

08 Dec, 2008 04:22 PM
Several senior employees of Australian Wool Innovation have accepted redundancies as part of a new wave of cost cutting by management.

Those to go include general manager of corporate affairs, Matthew Flugge, the manager of ethical production and trade, Dr Norm Blackman, and the manager of industry relations, Danny Pagoda.

AWI chief executive, Craig Welsh, said the redundancies were part of the next stage of the company's cost reduction strategy to "realign resources towards a marketing focused company and to address the current economic climate".

Mr Welsh thanked Mr Flugge for his six years of service with the company and indicated he would be leaving before the end of the year.

"Matthew has helped navigate the wool industry through some of the most difficult times it has seen," Mr Welsh said.

He also paid tribute to Dr Blackman and Mr Pagoda.

"Their depth of knowledge of the industry has been invaluable to the company, in particular, during the animal welfare issue, dealing with industry representatives as well as the challenges associated with the integration of The Woolmark Company into AWI.

"On behalf of AWI, I wish them well for future."

Mr Welsh said other aspects of the costs reduction strategy would be made public in the near future.

Well, well who is driving whom on this since the AGM fiasco? Let's know more? Where and what is the rationale?! Slash & burn, with blinkers on?

Let's all be clear on this. This is payback. Isn't it funny that Norm Blackman, who was involved in mulesing alternatives, is gone? The new AWGA aligned board is taking their revenge on the employees of AWI and will replace them with AWGA yes men. Piles of money will be wasted, morale will be destroyed and vital marketing plans will be delayed. A shambles in the making. Even Brenda has seen the writing on the wall and now won't get involved with Wally's World!

Well well well....not totally surprised, in fact I should have laid money on it. A return to Col Dorber's day where industry consultation was nil? Who is going to liaise with the growers and farmer groups now that Matthew and Danny are gone? I acknowledge that $300k+ was a bit much for a senior exec but I bet they've got nobody to replace them. What about the 158 other employees, couldn't possibly find a few heads? How interesting the manager of Ethical Trade goes 2 years before a mulesing alternative is found, and despite AWI's claim they wish to work closer on the mulesing issue with the retail sector. Maybe the mulesing alternatives are next to go? Funny how CEO Craig wants to focus on marketing when the pre-election promises from the AWGA-led candidates complained for a lack of R&D balance. I guess they're no different to our politicians...get in by any way, shape or form, then sing the tune that keeps them in. Here was me complaining 'cause all the regular TV comedies are on Christmas leave, might be funnier to sit and watch AWI for next few months.

Slash and burn, the future of the wool industry. Why don't we just jump the gun and vote zero at next year's wool poll ballet. Let the industry quickly descend into a fragmented commodity based chain, oh sorry, it might already be there. Value, not price, is only determined at one point in the chain, when the consumer buys it. Our chain is so focused on price discovery, that wool has become commoditised, the consumer gets forgotten, and we just focus on cutting costs and hating each other in the chain, not creating value. It's the chain and ownership structure of wool that is the fundamental problem. Let's have a discussion on that ?

Michael, excellent points well made, we have to at some time address the buckets of money growers have poured into funding a now disfunctional industry body and call enough. The future will be with professional growers who take responsibilty for marketing their wool, therefore they will need to have the capability of directing their funds to areas which provide a positive return for dollars invested.

Michael and RH, you are both correct. What is so sad is that for the first time in ages, the AWI Strategy included a number of areas that included value chain programs and partnerships. It's doubtful these things will survive Wal's blunt instrument. and dixie...yep, better than Christmas TV! I'm still waiting for Wal to tell everyone how he can be both pro and anti mulesing at the same time...

Sir George, are you a wool journalist by any chance? There are only two of you, and I think your depth of knowledge reveals yourself as the older of the two, sorry Marius please don't take offence.

It's time to stop fighting old battles Sir George. If you can be constructive now that will help, otherwise how about you concentrate on AWTA or Telstra?

It's very easy to be pro and anti mulesing george. No one who does it enjoys it but everybody who does it knows the simple husbandry, economic & welfare need of it.

Sir George is a plant, ignore him. He's just there to stir the thing up. As for the changes, let's just wait and see. Surely that is only fair? And we are, are we not, a fair people?
