It’s wool, wool, wool for Australia

THE athletes might be the star attraction at the Winter Olympics at Vancouver next year, but look closely and it's Merino wool that will also be on show.

Earlier this month the eagerly anticipated uniforms were released and while its native gum trees that appear to the inspiration for the colours, it's Merino wool – at least in the formal uniforms – that stands out.

In selecting the winning design for the uniforms, States Sportscraft general manager Sonia Wong, said it was with an eye on fashion and warmth that skewed her in the direction of Australian Merino wool.

The uniform features a classic suit for both male and female athletes made from 100 per cent Australian Merino wool.

With a nod to the ultimate Olympic dream, the suit is lined with gold trim.

A black leather belt with gold hardware which is embossed with the Australian Olympic Winter Team logo, the Australian coat-of-arms atop the Olympic rings, completes the look.

"The Athletes Commission wanted a formal uniform that the athletes could wear with pride that was comfortable whilst still being fashionable," said Ms Wong as she released the uniforms.

Wool has had a proud tradition with the Olympic Games, which in modern times has been used in each of the three Olympic team uniforms Sportscraft has designed.

Hooray, a vote of confidence for our wool industry. Let's keep it going.

How about a wool jumper made in Australia, as a Federal/State uniform requirement. Synthetics made in China aren't putting dollars back into OUR economy. Go you good Green thing.

What about the other components of the uniform??? ALL base layers of the uniform should be Merino wool. There's so many great active Merino products out there that would be PERFECT for these athletes! I don't mean the sport specific competing uniforms, but their "casual" uniforms for wear during the games. With that many snow enthusiasts in one place, I couldn't imagine a better advertisment for the Merino active products!!!!! And - Marc while I totally agree it's a good thing, if you do some research into the prior olympic uniforms you'll find great support for wool whenever Sportscraft has designed them. Sportscraft are an absolutely wonderful brand (I have no affiliation, other than loving their clothes!) and produce a large amount of Merino clothing, in their suiting range & knitwear. Beautiful quality, colours & cut. So perhaps we could support them by buying their (and our...) product too!

A range such as this would be perfect. http://www.wool.com/Design-and-Market_Collections-and-trends_Merino-Perform.htm Where's AWI on this? Does no one else see the huge chance here?
