Welsh the latest to leave AWI

16 Dec, 2008 03:09 PM
Chief executive officer, Craig Welsh, has become the latest senior staff member to leave Australian Wool Innovation.

His departure follows the redundancies of corporate affairs manager Matt Flugge, the manager of ethical production and trade, Dr Norm Blackman, and the manager of industry relations, Danny Pagoda, which were announced last week.

In a statement released to the media this morning, AWI chairman Wal Merriman said Mr Welsh was leaving the business with the support of the board.

"On behalf of AWI I would like to thank Craig Welsh for his work at AWI in undertaking the integration of The Woolmark Company," Mr Merriman said.

In return Mr Welsh thanked Mr Merriman, the board and the staff "for the opportunity to be part of the wool industry through these exciting and challenging times".

"I have been extremely pleased to have worked in such a dynamic industry and to manage the integration of the Woolmark into a new integrated business model," he said.

"This has been a very challenging and rewarding experience.

"Over the last two years I have come to the conclusion that the wool industry has a strong future and I am very optimistic about the company's role in the wool industry."

Well done Craig, so glad that after two years you've come to the conclusion that we all have a "strong future". You must be the only one in the industry to hold that view at the moment. With growers leaving the industry in their droves, processors, spinners, weavers and retailers wondering what the hell is going to happen with the mulesing issue, and what further action is pending from PETA and how that will impact on the millions of dollars of "mulesed" wool they have on hand, things could hardly be more dire. After reading this spin doctored media release I just hope that those with the axe turn their gaze to AWI's PR department. Enough is enough.

Anyone who had their ears to the ground for the last year knew that this guy was out of his depth. When will we stop being so parochial and thinking that a marketing manager from Myers has the experience, charisma and expertise to drive wool demand through fashion markets and supply chains in Europe, Asia and North America. That Welsh is gone is a good thing. But let's wait and see who replaces him. Will the board just play to the choir and drop in another Aussie shareholder pleaser, or someone internationally experienced who can do the job outside Australia where the real market is? How about someone with extensive experience in China? How about an Italian or a Brit? Thank God we now have Modiano on the board who can bring an international view. AWI has one year left to stop navel gazing and get on with it. Otherwise, you're gone.
