Probe into Brumby's water plan threatened

27 Apr, 2009 10:49 AM
THE Federal Opposition has given the Victorian Government one month to justify its plan to pipe billions of litres of irrigation water to Melbourne before the Opposition initiates a Senate inquiry into the affair.

The Victorian Government continues to withhold details over the amount of water forecast to flow down the north-south pipeline in 2011, amid growing evidence that flows will be significantly less than the maximum flow of 75 billion litres.

Pipe water will be sourced from savings made through irrigation infrastructure upgrades in the Goulburn-Murray region and diverted to Melbourne via the $600 million-plus pipeline.

But drought and the several years required to build the upgrades have led to pessimistic flow forecasts — for the pipe's initial years at least.

Now Opposition water spokesman Greg Hunt has announced moves to establish a national inquiry into urban water programs, with a major reason being Victoria's failure to consider alternatives to the north-south pipeline and the equally contentious Wonthaggi desalination plant.

"We have seen increasing evidence that the State Government claims of 75 billion litres of surplus water are fabricated," Mr Hunt said.

"It is time for an independent public inquiry into the reality of water savings under the Food Bowl Modernisation program, and the necessity of any savings remaining within the Murray-Darling system rather than being taken over the divide to Melbourne."

Mr Hunt warned that if the State Government would not come clean the Federal Opposition would move for an independent inquiry.

Water thieves never prosper, John.

Mr Brumby is on a drive to continually "grow" Victoria through population growth and urban sprawl, and in rural centres. He doesn't want the details of lack of water to be in the way of "progress"! There is nothing "sustainable" about continual growth. Nothing grows forever if they depend on ecosystems. If there is no water, our growth is already unsustainable. The public are being green-washed by terms such as eco-friendly when they are anything but! The public will ultimately have to pay for the fabricated water and continue to sacrifice for rampant growth.

I agree with the "cynic". We are going to have a lot of starving people in an unsustainable urban sprawl, as nothing will grow out in the country without water. Try saving the wasted water that flows continually into the Yarra and out to the sea.

Mr Brumby's water pileline is an insult to all Victorians. The savings to provide water for the pipe have been massively overstated, making the few drops of water it eventually delivers (if any) VERY expensive, given what the pipeline actually cost. I'm dumbfounded as to how stealing water from one region to the benefit of another, is viewed by anyone as fair or reasonable when cheaper and more palatable options are available. Doing so is divisive and inhibits the future growth of the region. True insight & leadership would have been shown by Mr Brumby by actually spending less money investing in two areas of waste water recovery. The first being, reclaiming & filtering storm water before it flows into the sea. The second, is filtration of sewerage water. We have had the technology for over 20 years to safely turn it inot drinking quality water, yet Mr Brumby prefers to ingnore the technology and steal water from the bush!! Combined, these two areas would yield significantly greater volumes of water to Melbourne than the pipe ever will, with the additional benefit of the water not having been stolen from another part of the state where the water is desparately needed already. The entire project reeks of a hasty idea & decision making process. The project appears both ill conceived and hastily approved. The pipeline shall perpetually stand as a monument to Mr Brumby's misappropriation of taxpayer funds, arrogance and total disregard for rural Victorian's.
