$3.5m advance for solar plant

17 Mar, 2010 09:50 AM
THE new owners of failed energy company Solar Systems will receive a $3.5 million advance on promised Victorian government grants, in a bid to revive plans for one of the world's largest solar power plants.

Solar Systems was placed in administration last year despite commitments worth $125 million, from state and federal governments towards the establishment of a 154 megawatt plant at Mildura, reports The Australian Financial Review.

A conditional deal was flagged last month that would allow Australian Stock Exchange-listed Silex Systems to buy Solar Systems' assets for $20 million in cash and shares.

That transaction was sealed yesterday yesterday when Victorian Premier John Brumby announced the state government would give $3.5 million to Silex to support development of the concentrating photovoltaic solar conversion technology to be used in the project.

What a waste! Far better of investing in Hot Fractured Rock Geothermal generation. It is clean, green base load generation ( meaning that it is there 24/7 not just when the sun shines) and it is a lot lower cost per kW than solar.

Lets hope this works, and its not more taxpayers money down the drain with shonky renewable energy mobs. Youve only got to look at all the money wasted on wind and see how much use that has been! Hasnt stopped a ounce of coal being burnt yet.

Wouldn't it be better to give all Australian households a Solar panel on their roof Oh no that would mean consumers would save money and not big corporations making it.
