700km algal bloom chokes Murray

03 Mar, 2010 07:21 AM
THE recent spate of toxic algal blooms has spread across more of northern Victoria with an entire irrigation district warned to stay away from its water.

Close to 700 kilometres of the Murray River has been choked by blue-green algae over the past fortnight, and last night the Murray Valley irrigation district was advised the channels that carry water to farms were affected.

It means farmers in towns such as Nathalia cannot even use the water for stock purposes, and, like the river, human contact is strongly discouraged.

This situation has been exacerbated by John Brumby holding back the water in Eildon that has been allocated to service the Murray River, so that he can pump some water down the North South pipeline during his election year. Kevin Rudd and Penny Wong allowed him to deprive the Murray of this water. The public should be told about this deception and all three politicians held responsible.
