Call for cat shooter and Mildura mayor to be sacked

24 Nov, 2009 06:04 AM
A COUNCIL officer who shot six kittens and cats in an animal shelter should be sacked immediately and the mayor should go too for defending him, the RSPCA says.

Mildura Council has defended the shooting of the six cats shortly after they were dropped at the shelter last week, saying they were feral and unable to be controlled.

But RSPCA president Hugh Wirth says the shootings are indefensible acts of cruelty and an animal should only ever be shot in an emergency situation, if it is suffering and needs to be put down immediately.

''This was not an emergency situation,'' Dr Wirth said. ''I'm completely outraged.''

The Mildura shelter had a vet available to administer lethal injections and with training in dealing with feral cats, ''if in fact that's what they were'', Dr Wirth said.

The RSPCA is investigating and the officer could face criminal prosecution under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Mayor Glenn Milne released a statement saying the officer acted lawfully.

''Whilst destruction of animals via gunshot is not normally the standard procedure, it can be performed in certain circumstances,'' he said.

''We regret that this has caused concern amongst the animal welfare community, however this is an accepted method that council can use. There were no malicious intentions by any member of staff.''

Dr Wirth said Cr Milne's defence of the killing made him ''as bad as the shooter''.

''Any manager in Mildura Shire who has permitted that ought to be fired as well as the shooter,'' he said.

The last known case of animals being shot in a shelter was in Horsham three years ago, he said.

Dr Wirth said such shootings often reflected an attitude that a bullet was cheaper than a vet.

A lethal injection would render a cat unconscious within about two seconds, while a gunshot could leave the animal suffering in pain for hours, he said.

Who the hell is tigerdicky? Obviously an animal hater. Can we track it down? I'd really like to give it an in-depth interview (while holding a whip)!

Rabies, You being such a cat lover, you must be real happy with the thousands of Australian fauna that are killed each year by your feral feline friends!

Cats a scourge to the Australian native wild life and if anyone has seen a feral cat they know just how dangerous they are. A bullet placed properly is just as humane as a lethal injection. Native animals have no hope against this predator. Baiting doesn’t work and efforts to reduce fox numbers increases feral cats since they are the only predator of their kittens. If the cat was feral bravo! A bullet to the head nothing suffers. Get real.

Why is it that most of these loony animal lovers have cats as pets? And it's always 'my cat would never kill wildlife'. It's their nature to hunt & kill. All cats should be destroyed for the sake of our wildlife. The RSPCA is the looney left of animal rights.

If the screeching cat lovers would travel with me into the arid areas and see the numbers of ferals (I wonder where ferals come from) that roam during the night time, they may have a little more balance to their arguement. Howard

why don't you dumb aussie's try a humane program called trap, nueter, and return...or does that take the fun away for you in killing defenseless caged cats and kittens...cowards and killers!

Oh for Pete's sake. Despatching unhandled & wild animals with a well-placed bullet is way kinder than the distress caused to cat & handler by trapping, catching & trying to hold something that resembles a bag of barbed wire going off like a set of bagpipes, whilst somebody else tries to get the "green dream" into it. Feral cats are no fun. Wasn't it an RSPCA "sharpshooter" who wounded & gut-shot Ruth Downey's dairy cows as they ran, panic stricken, around their paddock, in a misguided attempt to put them down? Such quiet & beloved animals (which in any case should not have been shot) surely deserved better? I wouldn't give the RSPCA a fart to cool their soup with, let alone a donation, & plenty of others have the same opinion.

There is no issue here. Why all this BS. Why is it that 'animal lovers' and do-gooders can be such tragic fools. A lethal lead injection to the forehead is the definitive quick humane method. No ifs , no bloody buts.

The debate on this story is between the informed and the ill informed. To suggest trap, neuter and release is grossly irresponsible. As though the cat is then going to think, "Oh, my nuts are gone, now I'm only a bolt, I won't kill those little defenseless birds!" Get real! Feral cats are such cruel animals that kill off many birds that are extremely important in the whole eco system. All feral cats have a lead deficiency which the council officer, referred to in this article, had obviously recognised and addressed in the correct manner.
