Cooler weather calms the bushfire threat

14 Jan, 2010 06:35 AM
COOLER weather brought welcome relief to the state yesterday and the bushfire near Cann River in East Gippsland was brought under control.

Department of Sustainability and Environment state duty officer Andrew Graystone said the fire was brought under control soon after 2pm.

Mr Graystone said up to 10 millimetres of rain fell on Tuesday night and this had helped dampen the area.

The Cann River fire, which burnt 29 hectares of bush in state forest, was a flare-up of a large bushfire in the area last month.

Mr Graystone said all fires were now under control. The weather outlook for the next four days was favourable and ''quite benign as far as fire weather goes''.
