Gippsland flood warning

21 Nov, 2008 11:35 PM
The Victorian Emergency Service has warned of possible widespread weekend flooding in Gippsland.

The warning follows the Bureau of Meteorology's forecast of heavy rain for eastern Victoria, coupled with strong winds over most of the state's south.

The warning came after heavy rain across much of the state yesterday, including close to 30 millimetres that fell across the dams on Melbourne's eastern outskirts.

But the heaviest falls were in north-eastern Victoria, where some towns received more than 60 millimetres.

Shepparton received 56 millimetres, which keeps the city on track for one of its wettest Novembers.

But the falls could be too late, with crops better suited to receiving rain earlier in spring.

Melbourne's rain fell in the right place: most of the city's dams are on the eastern outskirts and 11 millimetres was recorded falling directly over Cardinia Reservoir.

But dam levels have fallen for the sixth consecutive week, and Melbourne's storages hold 125 billion litres less than at this time last year, when they were at 40.2pc of capacity.

Good falls are expected in Melbourne this weekend, with storms and hail possible.
