GM protesters dump on Monsanto

15 Oct, 2010 08:32 AM
ROGUE GM canola weeds were dumped on Monsanto's Melbourne headquarters today as part of a protest against genetic engineering.

Bags of the stray weeds were dumped along with processed foods containing unlabelled GM soy, corn, canola and cottonseed by advocacy groups MADGE and Gene Ethics, which are outraged at "GM contaminating Australian food and ecosystems".

MADGE co-founder Fran Murrell said shoppers had a right to choose GM-free foods but Australia's labelling laws allowed most GM foods to remain unlabelled.

"Unlike the EU, processed GM food ingredients such as canola oil, sugars and starches are unlabelled in Australia," she said.

"Our food authority (FSANZ) exempts up to 1 per cent 'accidental' GM food contamination from labelling. Some processors are misusing the 'accidental' threshold in the food standard to mask routine GM contamination of soy baby formula and other products that should have a GM label," she claimed.

You would think people would have better places to focus their energy than wasting time with this. Maybe they should like, you know, get a job?

Fran Murrell – all MADGE and kindred anti- GM technology bodies need to do is ask the food providers to label their products if they are GM –free . If there is a significant demand for GM-free products those suppliers of labelled GM- free lines would stand to gain over their counterparts whose products contained GM residues . Consider the gluten- free foods. These are labelled by enterprising suppliers for their own financial advantage and for the useful service they provide for those with coeliac disease . The coeliacs don’t want all foods that contain gluten to be labelled as such nor should the anti-GM people want the rest of us to pay for GM labelling . It would seem that despite the bleatings and scaremongering of the anti- GM groups the demand for GM free foods etc in this country is not great . There are plenty of enterprising food suppliers here – if there were a real demand for anti-GM food etc. they would have it prominently presented in the food stores by now but this is not the case. cyril
