The biggest wind farm in the southern hemisphere will be built in Victoria in a project that will power up to 220,000 homes.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that construction will soon start on the $1 billion Macarthur Wind Farm, a project which she says will reduce Australia’s pollution by more than 1.7 million tonnes and create more than 1000 jobs.
Minister for Climate Change Senator Penny Wong said Labor’s expanded Renewable Energy Target would deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in essential additional revenue to the wind farm.
Treasurer Wayne Swan has also approved the project under Australia’s Foreign Investment Policy, allowing the wind farm to commence construction in the coming months.
The wind farm will be a joint venture between AGL and Meridian.
The 420 megawatt wind farm will be made up of 140 wind turbines and will be built near Hamilton in southwest Victoria. It will be operational by 2013.
