'Loony left' succeeds in having jumps racing banned

28 Nov, 2009 07:27 AM
JUMPS racing will be stopped by the end of next year after horse racing authorities declared it could not be justified in the face of an increasing number of falls and deaths.

A review of jumps by Racing Victoria found trials of safety measures to make jumps racing less dangerous to horses and riders had failed.

Racing Victoria chairman Michael Duffy said the surprise decision to ban jumps racing was agonising but the industry's image and reputation had to be protected within the community.

''The recommendations of six previous reviews had been implemented without any sustained reduction in incident rates,'' he said.

The controversial decision has been accepted by the State Government and cheered by animal rights groups.

But the jumps industry and country racing organisations vowed to fight the decision, saying it pandered to the ''loony left''.

A new Racing Victoria review of jumps racing found falls had increased from 3 per cent of starters five years ago to more than 5 per cent this year.

The review also quoted research showing 65 per cent of Victorians believed jumps racing incidents ''are not an acceptable price to pay for the retention of the sport''.

Racing Victoria will run a transition program for the state's 31 jumps jockeys as well as trainers, with $1 million in marketing for the Warrnambool Carnival - which features the Grand Annual Steeplechase.

Warrnambool Racing Club said the decision threatened its three-day carnival, which attracted more than 30,000 people this year.

The decision has fractured the racing community, with Country Racing Victoria accusing Racing Victoria of ''kowtowing to the politically correct and loony left''.

The Australian Jumping Racing Association delivered an unprecedented attack on the chairman and chief executive of Racing Victoria and vowed to fight yesterday's ruling to terminate jumps racing.

''Michael Duffy and his CEO Rob Hines are clearly incompetent and must be replaced because they have once again failed racing, failed its employees and failed the public at large,'' AJRA president Rodney Rae said.

''How they possibly arrived at this decision to terminate jumps racing is staggering. But, trust me, through the courts or through board positions on [Racing Victoria] we will have this declaration overruled.

''They have devastated Warrnambool, they have fractured the incomes of people in Victoria and South Australia and we believe enough is enough. We will not stand by and let an incompetent group of men ruin 150 years of jumping history.''

The State Opposition also decried the decision, saying it would cost hundreds of jobs and threaten horse racing outside Melbourne.

Opposition racing spokesman Denis Napthine pledged a Coalition government would push for the reinstatement of jumps racing if elected at next year's election.

This is the right decision and one that had to be made in light of the deaths and injuries which are inevitable no matter how many improvements are made. It is 10-20 times more dangerous than flat racing. 13 horses died on the track last year [Victoria] and 7 horses have died in 2009 [five in Victoria and two in South Australia]. A great win for horses!

This is a joke, and I wouldn't be surprised if this decision is reversed. People in the Sth West are absolutly outraged, as should everyone else as it's another step closer to something else being stopped by a small mob of uneducated people.

These vipers have not only sentenced hundreds of horses to the knackery but destroyed the careers and livelihoods of those people the are supposed to represent! Get rid of them now!

Oh please Kathleen, this is ludicrous. How is this win for horses when it means a pile of horses will be suddenly redundant and will therefore be destroyed as they have no value? This is a sport, there are risks in competing, even in show jumping animals are hurt. If every time an accident happened or a person was killed in any sport it was shut down how boring would life and spectators be? I am sure animals like humans enjoy competition, I just think this is a change forced by a group who don’t realise the animals will lose principally as it is their life.

Hi Kathleen, so you think this is great. Yes it will be great for the knackeries as they will now have a lot more horses to feed the dog population and for human consumption overseas. The RSPCA as they will have a lot more horses to rescue from starvation or other forms of neglect and then they will be looking for donations to help maintain their service. Well they won't get any more money from me, I won't be buying their Christmas cards or supporting any of there appeals. What do you want to stop now with the horses? Pony Club and horse shows as they have horses jumping in the 3 day events and those are jumped at speed in the cross country and even they have deaths occur there? Put your time and effort in stopping the human carnage on the roads, drug abuse and suicide. Then I will be happy.

Vic Racing has finally made the only progressive humane decision it could to ban the inherently cruel and dangerous jumps racing. To continue to allow innocent horses to suffer and die for the entertainment of a minority is morally wrong. It is a fact that jumps betting and prizemoney is significantly less than flats. We all know that hundreds of unprofitable horses are sent to an early death at the knackery anyway. A very small number have their "life" extended, so they can be whipped over hurdles for minimal, or no, financial reward to the vested interests. Everyone knows that the large majority of people who attend picnic race events like Oakbank only go so they can dress up, drink up, hook up and throw up. Whether the horses are running or jumping is irrelevant to them. Over 5000 people so far have signed a petition to ban it in SA. I applaud Vic Racing for doing the right thing. If the people who support a ban on jumps are labelled the "loony left" then those desperate people who want it to continue must be the "selfish sadists". Blatant cruelty to animals is becoming less and less acceptable, particularly when it is based on gambling and entertainment.

To all these uneducated people the racing industry in Australia is responsible for breeding approx 18,000 foals each year. Only thirty percent of foals born actually end up racing. Most of the unwanted will be slaughtered or abandoned to a life of neglect and suffering. So the answer is stop overbreeding.

Good riddance! Nothing more than a bloodsport. To ‘mick’, you say ‘stopped by a small mob of uneducated people’, that’s why the majority has wanted it banned. To ‘Short sighted’, in a sport involving people they choose to participate, horses don’t, that’s why they have to be flogged to keep going. To ‘Monica’, horses end up at the knackery regardless of jumps racing. Do you honestly think all the horses that jumps race are spared from the knackery once they to stop earning money? No, because horses are disposable objects in the racing industry and can be replaced! Suffering should be stopped where ever possible, human or non-human! So get real and get a life rednecks and do something positive like get some compassion !

To about time, as if the majority want it banned. What a joke you loonies are. I could get more people to sign there names on a petition in 10 mins than you could ever get. Your groups are a dispicable thorn in the side of everyone who owns a animal, your uneducated and laughable opinions should be kept to yourselves where they will do no harm.

I bet the horses don't class it as "sport". It is said that many horses will go to the knackery. Would the supporters of jumps racing prefer that the horses end up with broken legs prior to going to the knackery, just so they can enjoy their "sport"?
