Marysville has been reopened to residents today, six weeks after the bushfires that burnt down all but a handful of properties in the town and killed 45 people.
The streets of the fire-ravaged town will only be accessible to people who can prove they are Marysville residents, with police checking identification at roadblocks.
It will be the first time many locals will step foot on their destroyed properties since February 7 and follows weeks of searching by police, forensic investigators and army personnel for human remains or clues about whether the fire was started by an arsonist.
In the weeks since the firestorm, Marysville residents have become increasingly angry that they have not been allowed to return home and have complained that the shutdown will make it harder to rebuild their community.
The reopening of Marysville follows the lifting of roadblocks to Kinglake to the general public earlier this week.
