Opposition slams rebuilding effort

15 Oct, 2009 07:06 AM
State Government incompetence has resulted in a small fraction of the 2200 houses lost on Black Saturday being rebuilt, according to the Opposition.

As Premier John Brumby promoted fire safety in country Victoria yesterday, Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu said rebuilding delays were causing additional trauma to bushfire victims.

Last month, Bushfire and Reconstruction Authority chief Christine Nixon said five of the homes lost to the February 7 bushfires had been rebuilt. About 1000 building permits for bushfire properties have been issued, with up to 30 per cent of those for homes.

The Premier said the rebuilding was the biggest in the state's history after a natural disaster, with work including the clearing of blocks at a cost of $100 million and the building of temporary villages.

Mr Brumby said every precaution was being taken to protect lives and homes in high danger areas such as the Otways, the Dandenongs and the Macedon Ranges.

"We have put in place stronger regulations in terms of rebuilding," he said.
