Rain helps fire crews

20 Jan, 2010 03:00 AM
FIREFIGHTERS are working to bring a 28,000-hectare fire under control in the Genoa-Broome Creek area in far eastern Gippsland.

Rain helped their efforts yesterday to dampen the blaze that was started by lightning on Saturday. The fire is burning through dense forest on public land.

The effort to combat the fire is being managed by the Department of Environment and Sustainability, which had 30 trucks and tankers at the scene.

A spokeswoman for the CFA said no towns were under threat. It was hoped forecast cooler weather would allow fire crews to start backburning and building containment lines.
