Rush to launch bushfire-proof products

12 Oct, 2009 11:58 AM
As Victoria prepares for another devastating bushfire season, small business is investing millions in new building products capable of withstanding fire conditions like those on Black Saturday.

The Australian Financial Review reports that strict new building standards that require windows, doors, shutters and roofing to incorporate passive fire prevention into their design are providing niche markets that could pay dividends for some companies.

A new fire-retardant roofing system is the cornerstone of BlueScope Steel's $400,000 outlay on research and development in bushfire products.

Developed with Promat Australia and Forest & Wood Products Australia, the roof can withstand 30 minutes in a blast furnace.
