Victoria not out of the woods yet

09 Mar, 2010 05:40 AM
AFTER the once in a lifetime storms, Melbourne and much of Victoria will be looking for calmer weather - but not quite yet.

The low that helped deliver the chaotic weekend weather, will have a final sting in its tail before it heads off to New Zealand.

The low is deepening, or dropping in pressure. Egged on by a system arriving from the southwest, this low is about to get wild.

Up until now its main feature has been that of a storm generator.

Now, moving into more temperate latitudes, it will take on the characteristics of a Southern Ocean depression.

As the low moves south and deepens, winds will increase significantly.

Winds are already beginning to gust past gale force in Bass Strait.

Tasmania and parts of southern Victoria will be battered by some showery and potentially damaging wind gusts, exceeding 90km/h and possibly pushing past 100km/h.

Its going to get much colder too, as the low draws colder air from the south.

There will even be potential for some snow on the peaks of the highlands of Tasmania.

During Tuesday, a high will ridge in from the west, dropping winds and clearing skies.

From Wednesday, the sun will return, albeit after some cool mornings.

Everything is "once in a lifetime"; "100 year event" etc. Cut the excessive use of superlatives and do your homework.
