 Water pipeline plan rejected

Water pipeline plan rejected

13 Aug, 2009 10:22 AM
OPPOSITION MPs in the upper house yesterday voted against aspects of the State Government's bulk water entitlements legislation, potentially preventing Melbourne from accessing water through the north-south pipeline.

The bulk water entitlement legislation would have enabled the State Government to allocate water savings from the food bowl modernisation project to Melbourne via the pipe.

But opposition in the upper house means the Government will either have to renegotiate the entitlement, or find a way of implementing their existing plan. Water Minister Tim Holding accused the Opposition parties of putting politics before water security.

The media should be reporting WHY the opposition have done this. Recent articles, including the one above, imply the opposition is simply depriving Melbourne of water, but give no explanation as to why they are doing this. One can understand some city papers abetting the Brumby government by omitting some of the facts, but a paper such as S&L should at least give the other side of the story.

Y.G Mystics, you are correct. The opposition has very good reason to object to the legislation. The truth of the matter is that with irrigators receiving zero or very little allocation, there is no water available to send to Melbourne. Any savings should be used to allow irragators to receive their full allocation. This pipeline knee jerk reaction to attempt to make up for Labor's failure to upgrade water storage infrastructure. Until such time as country irrigators receive their full allocation and the Murray river has good flows, not a sinlge litre of water should be diverted to Melbourne.
